Florent Schmitt: The Composer’s Recorded Legacy

Liner Notes Magazine logoThe international music publication Liner Notes Magazine, established in 2022, is a quarterly e-zine dedicated to historical classical artists and recordings — with its major focus stretching from the earliest days of 78-rpm recordings through the LP era.

Joe Moore Liner Notes

Joseph A. Moore, editor-in-chief and publisher of Liner Notes Magazine.

Published by Joseph A. Moore (who also serves as editor-in-chief), the magazine additionally covers significant “behind the scenes” personages including producers, sound engineers, cover art designers and other talents who made these memorable classical albums possible.

I became a charter subscriber to Liner Notes Magazine at the time of its inaugural issue (Winter 2022), so I can personally attest to the  overall content worthiness and high production standards of this publication. Each issue of the magazine is chockfull of information – nearly 200 pages of fascinating articles, commentary, photographs and illustrations. Contributing writers to the magazine include noted specialists and scholars across a varied range of disciplines and interests.

Also included in each issue of the publication are reproductions of vintage advertisements that originally appeared in music magazines during the 1950s and 1960s.

Considering that a one-year subscription to Liner Notes Magazine is priced at a very affordable US$20, it is truly one of the most valuable and cost-effective resources for anyone interested in the history of recorded classical music during (and on either side of) the “Golden Age” of vinyl. Those interested can subscribe to the publication by visiting the Liner Notes website. Moreover, back issues of the publication are available to purchase at single-copy prices.

Liner Notes Issue 9

Part I appeared in Liner Notes Issue 9 (Winter 2024).

In late 2023 I was invited by editor-in-chief Moore to contribute an article about Florent Schmitt’s musical legacy on records, focusing primarily on early recordings of his music along with those released during the LP era.

The resulting article that I prepared was published in two parts. Part I, covering the 78-rpm recordings (along with a concise biographical sketch of the composer) appeared in the Winter 2024 issue of Liner Notes, while Part II, covering LPs and into the CD era, was included in the Spring 2024 issue of the magazine.

Liner Notes Issue 10

Part II appeared in Liner Notes Issue 10 (Spring 2024).

For the benefit of devotees of Florent Schmitt’s music, Joseph Moore has graciously given me permission to reproduce the pages from these two Liner Notes Magazine articles here on the Florent Schmitt Website + Blog. The articles are presented below in their entirety.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Moore for providing complimentary access to this content, and we thank him for his generosity!
